We believe the Scandinavian way of life has a lot to offer.
We think its mystical, modest, and modern.
What’s your Scandinavia?
Sanne and Sara first met in 2008 while working on the same development project in Washington DC. After years of deliberations over lunch and coffee about staying rooted in their Scandinavian way of life – having both lived in the US for over a decade – they joined forces and launched Scandinavian Living.
Today, they have both settled down with their American boyfriends, have children, and go about living their lives on the East Coast the Scandinavian way; though a significant amount of time is also spent in Denmark – the country they still call home.
Sanne is from Hellerup, a suburb near Copenhagen known for its beaches and trendy lifestyle. She grew up in the city and loves design and good food. After earning a Master’s degree from Copenhagen Business School, she has travelled extensively throughout the world and lived in Russia, Bulgaria, and Vietnam before coming to the US. Yet, strangely enough it seems that the farther you go, the closer you get to home.
This is especially true once you start building a nest of you own. Sanne loves contemplating the differences between life in Scandinavia and life in the US – subtle and substantial alike. She is passionate about herring and bucket bikes, and wonder why these Scandinavian favorites aren’t more popular in the US?!
Sara is from Ålbæk, a tiny town located about 20 minutes from the tip of Denmark, Skagen. She grew up by the ocean and loves everything nature. In fact, her close connection to nature growing up made her a bit of an environmentalist, which led her to pursue a Master’s degree in Global Environmental Politics from American University in Washington, DC.
Even though she’s come to love the US, she still stays very close to her Scandinavian roots. She loves biking everywhere on her green oma bike and eats rye bread and licorice with great delight. After having her daughter, Freja, staying close to her Scandinavian heritage has become even more important to teach Freja about the lifestyle, language, and culture of the Scandinavian countries.
Hanne is a Scandinavian beauty aficionado. She’s originally from Copenhagen, Denmark, and now lives in Annapolis with her husband and twins Finn and Fiona. Hanne has years of experience making people look beautiful. She graduated from the CIDESCO International Beauty School in Copenhagen in 1999. Since then she’s owned 4 different spas in the Copenhagen area as well as founded and run the Danish beauty magazine, GO Beauty. After moving to the States in 2011 she’s worked at Nectar Skin Bar in Washington DC and is currently working in Edgewater, MD at another salon.
Anna is born and raised in the north of Sweden. While having lived outside of Sweden since 2007, Anna travels home at least twice a year to see friends and family. She loves cooking, fishing and travel. Right now she lives with her husband Ryan and baby boy Oliver in Washington, DC. Previous to DC she was based 4 years in Mozambique. Anna has Masters degrees in Economics and Political sciences from the University of Lund, Sweden and works as an ICT and Energy Specialist at the World Bank.
Charlotte is a mom, a wife, and an author—in that order. She’s originally from Copenhagen, Denmark, but now lives in Seattle with her husband and 3 kids: Alfred and the “twincesses”, Emma and Olivia. When she’s not “mom”, Charlotte spends all her free time writing what readers call compelling, fun, and loving stories. She is the author of three novels.
